3/8/2024

It takes a village, and we have the best one, which means it is no easy task to pick who will receive the Vol of the Year awards. We are very grateful for all of our Vols, but we want to recognize these individuals who showed up for STAR in big ways throughout 2023. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your continued support of STAR - you have made all the difference in 2023!
Picture
Larry Petr
2023 Facility Vol of the Year

This award is long overdue since Larry has volunteered with STAR for an unknown number of hours over the course of 36 years - after all his wife is our Founder and Executive Director! You’ll see him around the barn cleaning, weed eating, helping set up for events, or anything else that might need to be done.
Picture
Morganna Eid
2023 Junior Vol of the Year

Morganna has only been volunteering since summer 2023, but she has made a huge impression on everyone. She is wonderful at finding tasks to be done around the barn and comes ready to work with a smile on her face. She even helped at our Annual Horse Show by handing out ribbons.
Picture
Julie Kirst
2023 Rookie Vol of the Year

Though she has only been volunteering for a year, Julie has jumped right in by serving as a barn helper, side walker, and horse leader. We love seeing her at the barn, which is fairly often as she lives nearby. She is one of our first calls when we need help, and her reply is always, “I’m on my way!”
Picture
Sydney Campbell
2023 Equine Vol of the Year

Sydney has been volunteering since August of 2022. She not only helps with classes but also exercising our horses both on the ground and in the saddle. She often rides for our instructors in training and never complains, no matter how many times she might need to re-do the test for them!
Picture
Joseph Maples
2023 Lesson Vol of the Year

Joseph has been volunteering since 2013 - which means he has volunteered over 1,000 hours so far! He is a side walker, horse leader, and barn helper - so he is incredibly reliable, trustworthy, and able to keep his cool even in the toughest situations.
Picture
Hannah Erickson
2023 Barn Helper Vol of the Year

Hannah started volunteering in August of 2020 and can be found at the barn most Thursday nights. She is reliable, trustworthy, and hard working - and you can bet she will be up for Barn Captain next year!
Picture
Earl and Kimberly Platt
2023 Family Vol of the Year

This husband and wife duo began volunteering in December of 2022. They help out with classes, barn help, and all the little things in between. They have gone above and beyond by purchasing fly masks for our horses in the summer, as well as new dressage letters for the outdoor arena!
Picture
Lisa Galbraith
2023 South Knox Vol of the Year

Lisa has been volunteering since 2018 and is an excellent horse leader and side walker who is always willing to offer an extra hand! She is patient with the horses and kind to the riders - and she is always asking questions to be the best volunteer she can be.
Picture
Bill Duggleby
2023 Heroes & Horses Vol of the Year

Bill started volunteering in 2021 and has volunteered in almost every session since! He cares deeply about ensuring Veterans get the support they need - he even recently began the process of becoming certified as a therapeutic riding instructor!
Picture
Marcus Williams
2023 STRIDES Vol of the Year

Though he only began volunteering earlier this year, Marcus has been a great addition to the STAR family! In the short time he has been here, he has grown to become a confident leader and mentor for many of the youth in our STRIDES programs.
Picture
Dara Reppe
2023 STAR Vol of the Year

Dara has been volunteering since 2019 and basically does it all. She is a Barn Captain, horse leader, volunteers with the STRIDES program, serves
on the equine committee, and helps with Occupational Therapy clients. She is a joy to be around and she lights up everyone around her.

2023 Barn Party Fun

On November 17, 2023 STAR held its annual Barn Party. We had a fantastic time celebrating another great year of programming at STAR! This event is a favorite with over 200 volunteers, participants, family members, staff, and board members in attendance.

Chick-Fil-A Lenoir City provided a delicious meal, attendees played a variety of games, Charlie (the horse) dominated at apple bobbing, the silent auction was a success, and we recognized our 2023 Volunteers of the Year!

If you missed out on this incredible event, we hope you will make plans to join us for our next one - mark your calendars for November 22, 2024!

Herd Update - Spring 2024

3/8/2024

In only a short time, there have been quite a few changes to our herd at STAR.

In the fall of 2023, we welcomed Black Jack, a draft cross gelding with a diverse background of experience as a mounted patrol horse, trail horse, and carriage horse. Meanwhile, Oso, Nikki, and Goya transitioned from South Knox to Lenoir City, where they have seamlessly settled into their new environment. Meanwhile, we bid farewell to Read as he embarked on a new chapter, finding a home with STAR staff member, Sam.

December of 2023 marked a somber moment as we said a hard goodbye to our beloved Bug, who crossed the rainbow bridge at the age of 27. Bug’s remarkable 22-year tenure at STAR left a lasting mark on our program and the countless lives he touched, leaving behind cherished memories that will endure.

Since the start of the new year, we have welcomed our newest horse in training, Iron Man, aka Tony the Pony. He will undergo a three month trial period to assess his suitability for our program. Simultaneously, we bid farewell to Ferris as he embarks on a well-deserved retirement. Formerly a mainstay for the Maryville College Equestrian Team, Ferris’ serene retirement is a testament to his years of dedicated service.

We are actively seeking a retirement home for our best guy, Oliver. After 16 remarkable years at STAR and a prior career in the hunter world, now at age 29, Oliver deserves a peaceful retirement. Prospective caretakers should possess equine care experience, as Oliver requires special attention due to medical needs. Those interested in providing Oliver with a loving retirement home are encouraged to contact Stephanie by sending an email to [email protected] or calling the office. (If you ever have a desire to house a retired STAR horse when their time comes, please also be sure to let Stephanie know!)

As we continue to grow and expand our programs, we need more equine partners to join our herd!

While STAR is not a retirement facility, we offer a fulfilling second career. We are the perfect place for a horse who is no longer able to do their previous job but is not ready to be turned out in a field. We are searching for horses that are rideable, sound, levelheaded, and easy going and are preferably younger than 18 years old.

Our screening process involves initial discussions, a visit to the horse’s current home, and if deemed suitable, a trial period at STAR. Both donation and free lease options are available.

For more information or to recommend a suitable addition to our herd, please call our office or send an email to Stephanie at [email protected]. Your assistance in ensuring the well-being and success of our equine companions is greatly appreciated!

You may have noticed we have several new faces around the office at STAR. If you haven't had a chance to meet them yet, be sure to stop by and say "Hi!"
Picture
Whitney Seymore, Facilities Assistant
Whitney serves as STAR’s Facilities Assistant. He comes to STAR with years of experience in construction, framing, plumbing, and electrical work. Though he doesn’t have much horse experience, he is a regular jack of all trades and is a great addition to the STAR family.
Picture
Robyn Ulrich, Board Member
Former SVP at Scripps Networks Interactive, Robyn led home promotions and helped launch HGTV products and HGTV Magazine. Previously, she directed marketing at DIY Network and launched their respective websites. A University of Cincinnati graduate in graphic design, Ulrich is extremely involved in her community and now enjoys traveling, boating, and skiing in retirement with her husband.
Picture
Tim Hinson, Board Member
During his tenure as Director of Operations for the West Region of Regal Theatres, Tim managed territory that extended across 14 states and 195 locations. Since retiring in 2019, he has contributed as a consultant within the industry, specializing in expert testimony for theater-related litigation. In his free time, Tim enjoys working on his farm with his wife who is a small animal veterinarian.
Picture
Pat O'Brien, Board Member
A retired emergency physician, EMS medical director, and Tennessee Air National Guard veteran, Pat has co-founded clinics, advised at Remote Area Medical, and served at the Kim Health Center and Knoxville Area Project Access. With more than 35 years volunteerism experience, he is excited to join the Board of Directors while continuing to volunteer with the Heroes & Horses program.
Picture
Paul Nichols, Outgoing Board Member
We extend a special thank you to outgoing Board member Paul Nichols for his dedicated service to STAR. His six year tenure on the board has been marked by his unwavering commitment to our mission of #HealingThroughHorses, making his advocacy and support invaluable to our organization. We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to reconnect with Paul in the future, as he has graciously pledged to remain involved.
