Nonprofit STAR Celebrates 35 Years of
Equine Assisted Services in East TennesseeKNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 2, 2022) - The Shangri-La Therapeutic Academy of Riding today announces the launch of its 35-year anniversary capital campaign, with a goal of raising $3.76 million to benefit East Tennessee residents in need.
STAR uses horse-related activities to foster personal achievement in individuals with physical, mental and neurological disabilities or those with other special challenges. Historically, the nonprofit has served 245 students and veterans per year through its Therapeutic Riding program, and it maintains a waiting list of nearly 150 more. STAR’s capital campaign will enable it to expand its behavioral and mental health programming and open a second facility to accommodate more participants.
“We’re excited to celebrate 35 years of serving the East Tennessee community,” said STAR executive director Lynn Petr. “Every day, our participants feel empowered to accomplish more than they thought was possible, and our Knoxville and Lenoir City communities have stepped up in an incredible way to help us maintain and grow our programming.”
SouthEast Bank, headquartered in Farragut, Tennessee, has a close relationship with STAR. On Thursday, Feb. 10, the bank will present STAR with a $100,000 check to help revitalize the nonprofit’s Lenoir City equine facilities.
"It's an honor to support STAR and their capital campaign," said Bill Thompson, CEO of SouthEast Bank. "Lynn and the entire team are passionate about changing lives in our East Tennessee communities, and we're proud to be a part of their mission to serve others."
In partnership with organizations like SouthEast Bank, STAR looks forward to another year of bettering the East Tennessee community through Equine Assisted Services. For more information about STAR’s mission and upcoming events, visit rideatstar.org.
