The Reflections program was created to serve early and middle-stage Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers in Knox and surrounding counties. Intended to supplement the Minis in Motion program, which takes horses to memory care units in East Tennessee, the Reflections program invites Alzheimer’s patients to STAR for interaction with humans and horses.
Participants are assessed for behavioral and physical suitability to the program, and caregivers are invited to attend alongside the participant to provide a familiar face and a soothing presence. After participating in two lessons with the participant, the caregiver has the option of remaining on site but resting during the lesson time.
Each participant will be paired with a suitable equine and a STAR volunteer. A STAR staff person who holds ESMHL certification will supervise and direct the group. Our goal is to provide a positive experience for the participant and their caregiver, one that facilitates the generation and use of language, encourages social interaction, and increases a sense of well-being.
