Sampson came to STAR in 2009 as a 4-year-old, much younger than the horses we typically accept. We prefer our equine partners to have more life experience, making them less reactive to new situations. However, the woman who rescued Sampson as a foal from a Premarin farm assured us he had the perfect temperament for this work. Taking her word, we decided to give him a chance—and we’re so glad we did.
From the start, Sampson proved to be a natural fit for the program. His large stature made him the go-to horse for carrying our biggest riders. But his size wasn’t his most impressive quality—it was his intuition. During one class, Sampson suddenly stopped and refused to move, despite the efforts of his leader and side walkers. It wasn’t until someone looked up that they realized the rider was having a seizure. Sampson had sensed something was wrong and stood calmly until the rider was safe. Sampson’s awareness goes beyond that extraordinary moment. He’s known for heading to the center of the arena if a saddle feels loose and for alerting staff to potential issues before anyone else notices. After a challenging start to life, Sampson found his stride at STAR, where his gentle nature and remarkable instincts have made him a true cornerstone of our program. |

Mater is remembered by most who are lucky enough to meet him. This gentle giant joined STAR in 2014 after his career as a show horse was cut short due to a jumping injury. Despite his impressive size and history, he is best known for his calming presence and steady demeanor, which has made him a favorite among participants and staff alike.
Cool, calm, and collected, he has a unique ability to ground those around him, offering reassurance in even the most stressful moments. However, like many larger-than-life figures, he has a surprising quirk - he tends to shy away from the STAR minis. Mater's gentle spirit and unwavering reliability have made him an invaluable part of the STAR family, where he continues to bring joy and comfort to all who work with him. |

Goya joined STAR in 2017 as a donation from Lexlin Gypsy Ranch, where she had been part of their breeding program and later participated in their mounted veterans' program. When she arrived, she quickly settled in and spent the first part of her STAR career at our former South Knoxville location, excelling in Equine Assisted Learning activities.
Once Goya understood her role and the tasks being asked of her, she showed an incredible ability to push participants just enough outside their comfort zones. With her guidance, participants have learned invaluable life skills like confidence, teamwork, setting boundaries, standing up for themselves, and even how to drive a car. Her soft eyes, flowing mane, and striking coloring naturally draw people to her, but it’s her unique personality, ability to connect, and intuitive teaching spirit that keep them coming back. Goya’s presence at STAR has left an enduring impact on everyone she’s worked with. |

Snip came to STAR in 2019 after her owner suffered a serious accident and was no longer able to care for her. Before arriving, she spent most of her time as a trail horse, though she carries a visible reminder of her past - a deep scar on her back right hoof from an old injury. Despite this, Snip has become an exceptional part of the STAR team.
With her calm, sweet, and steady personality, Snip is a perfect fit for participants who need a patient and tolerant partner, especially those sensitive to sudden or loud sounds. Her ability to stay composed in any situation has proven invaluable time and again. As a Tennessee Walking Horse, her smooth and faster gait allows riders to experience speed without the bounce of a trot, making her a favorite for those seeking a unique riding experience. Snip has excelled in all of STAR’s programs, quietly earning the admiration and affection of everyone she meets. Her resilience and gentle spirit make her an irreplaceable part of our herd. |
